Definition:

OER are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and re-purposing by others. Open educational resources include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge. (Hewlett Foundation)

This Libguide is designed to give faculty an introduction to open educational resources and open textbooks.

    • The tabs at the top of the guide will assist you in locating open resources.

      • The second tab (Open Textbook Collections) provides a list of open textbooks from various sources in higher education. 

      • The third tab (OER Repositories) provides a list of OER repositories, which provide links to open textbooks, course guides, syllabi, assignments, slide shows, tests, etc. 

      • The following tabs provide you with a sampling of open textbooks available that align with LMC's Academic Programs.

Tools to help you start your OER journey

This starter kit has been created to provide instructors with an introduction to the use and creation of open educational resources (OER). The text is broken into five sections: Getting Started, Copyright, Finding OER, Teaching with OER, and Creating OER.

This guide outlines a five-step process for faculty seeking to modify an open textbook. It includes detailed instructions for importing and editing widely used open textbook file types and platforms.

The Rebus Guide to Publishing Open Textbooks (So Far) is a living repository of collective knowledge, written to equip all those who want to publish open textbooks with the resources they need. Representing two years of collaboration, innumerable conversations and exchanges, and a wide range of collective knowledge and experience, the Guide is a book-in-progress and will evolve and grow over time.

List of resources, including online communities, created by the Open Education Network for anyone wishing to learn more about publishing OER textbooks.
