Benton Harbor High School - In 1946 Benton Harbor Junior College (BHJC) opened its doors to the first 78 students

1947 - The War Assets Administration provided an old Quonset hut which the student took to calling “Old Maimed” – classes at both the Quonset hut and the high school.

In the summer of 1948 The old Central School on Pipestone was chosen to be the new school. Built in the 1860’s, this old building was refurbished and became the third home for the new college.

In 1954 we became Benton Harbor Community College and Technical Institute (CCTI).

In 1958 construction started on a new campus at 715 East Britain Avenue, the first classes were held here in January of 1959.

In 1964 CCTI is renamed Lake Michigan College as it becomes a county district.

In 1967 the first ground breaking was held for the Benton Harbor Campus on Napier Ave, if you are a current student campus looks a bit different now. The dedication for the campus was held in 1976.
