WILLIAM HESSEL LIBRARY - PRINT RESERVE GUIDELINES
Print reserve services at the William Hessel Library provide current Lake Michigan College students with convenient, short-term access to high-demand course materials, including textbooks, instructor copies, and supplemental readings. By working closely with faculty to maintain up to date reserve collection, the library staff helps reduce barriers to essential academic resources and supports equitable access to learning materials for all students.
Faculty/instructors may reserve materials to be used by their students for specific classes. Faculty/instructors must fill out the FACULTY COURSE RESERVE form before placing an item on reserve. To guarantee reserve materials are ready for access by the beginning of the semester, requests must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the first day of classes.
The procedure described below applies to the William Hessel Library reserve system and are promulgated pursuant to 17 U.S.C. Section 101 et seq. The library will not knowingly make available any material which violates these regulations. Materials are available only to the Lake Michigan College community and all are expected to adhere to copyright and fair use guidelines.
Fair Use Application
Reserve services operate under the fair use provisions of copyright law (17 U.S.C. § 107), which consider:
- Purpose and Character of Use: Educational and non-commercial use supports fair use.
- Nature of the Copyrighted Work: Published, factual works receive broader fair use protection than unpublished or highly creative works.
- Amount and Substantiality: The library limits reserves to entire works that are legitimately acquired.
- Effect on Potential Market: Short-term loans minimize market impact.
